Edema in Legs
Edema in legs is noticeable swelling due to fluid build-up in body tissues. Edema normally happens in the feet and legs. The swelling is from an increase of extra fluid beneath the skin in the spaces among the tissues. Body tissues are comprised of cells and connective tissues that mend the cells with one another. The majority of the body's fluids outside of the cells are commonly kept in two places; blood vessels and the interstitial spaces. Many diseases, extra fluid can build-up in either one or both of these chambers.
Swollen feet and ankles is a common health condition, especially in older people. Unexpected accumulation of fluid in the ankles, feet, and legs is referred to as peripheral edema.
This painless swelling can upset both legs and can include the calves and thighs. Gravity can contribute to the swelling and can be noticeable waist down.
